Abandon All Hope-Red Shore Benefit

Abandon All Hope-Review

Abandon All Hope - Where Life And Death Meet
Showing a good amount of promise Adelaide (South Australia) continues to reign as the home of Australian melodic metalcore with Abandon All Hope the latest act to emerge from the city. Within the last couple of years, the five-piece act (Comprising of vocalist Micah Leinonen, guitarists Shaan Kelly and Jake Battista, bassist Nic Scappatura and drummer Cameron Healy) have been seen by many within the metalcore scene supporting the likes of Hatebreed, Terror and Darkest Hour on their international visits to Australia, while playing alongside a countless number of national acts within that time. Now signed up to Melbourne based independent label Washed Up Records (With a roster that includes Carpathian, Wish For Wings, 50 Lions and Pro Team), Abandon All Hope have finally unleashed their debut E.P. Where Life And Death Meet.

Opening up with a hellish minute introduction piece (Where Life And Death Meet) that boasts a creepy voiceover, horrific screams and a closing gunshot, the band soon get things underway in a truly metallic fashion with the first official song Keyless Cage. There’s a strong Swedish melodic death metal influence is evident on the guitarists that’s somewhat to be expected, but it’s the impact of the breakdowns, Leinonen’s strong vocal presence and the huge production (Handled by Simon Giuliani) that really impresses. The hammering My Perceptions is full of dynamics in the production sense, with the guitars and the drums in particular really standing out in the metallic sense, while the shortened brutality of The Hanging and the melodically inclined Kill If I Could are definite standout cuts midway through the E.P. A Meters A Mile represents a huge change in direction for the band with Leinonen’s keyboard contributions, his predominant clean vocal efforts and the minimal guitar work giving the song a sort of creepy Katatonia feel, but it’s with the aggressive Angels Wings Are The Devils Things, the fast paced Cool Black Soul and the epic Defining Moments that Abandon All Hope reinstate their core melodic death metal/metalcore sound.

Abandon All Hope has really created something impressive with their debut effort, and a band definitely worth keeping an eye on in the future.

8/10
